Settling the whole issue with Google contact syncing
I was thinking that it'd be good to settle the whole "syncing with Google contacts" issue once and for all, since I can't seem to find a clear answer anywhere.
Let me describe what I know so far, and what I've experienced.
I know a few things for sure:
- There is an option to sync with Google contacts in iTunes
- There is an option to sync with Google contacts in Address Book
- There is an option to sync with Google contacts via the new push method (Microsoft Exchange)
- When you assign a picture to a contact on your phone, the caller ID results in the picture showing up full screen
- When you assign a picture to a contact on your computer, the caller ID results in the picture showing up in a small box in the upper right hand corner
That's about it. Now, up til about a month ago, I always assigned caller ID photos on my phone itself, resulting in the full-screen caller ID photos. Some of my contacts on Gmail would set their own photos themselves as well, resulting in me being able to see them on GChat. However, even though I synced my Google contacts with my phone (not sure if it was through iTunes, Address Book, or a combination of the two), photos from Google stayed on Google and photos from my phone/computer stayed on my phone/computer.
After a particular sync about a month ago, the photos for my Google contacts and phone contacts all merged (i.e. photos from my phone were showing up for that person in Google and vice versa). I'm not sure exactly what triggered this change, but this went on for about a month (and all my caller ID photos kept reverting to the small upper-right hand box after each sync). Sometime after that, I began using Exchange to push my contacts through the air, but it didn't seem to affect anything.
I just bought a new phone recently and reset everything. It now seems to have reverted to the way it originally was (segregation between Google and my computer in terms of photos). I currently have the contact sync feature in Exchange disabled, as well as the one in Address Book. Only the "sync with Google contacts" feature in iTunes is active right now.
Any ideas on what the heck controls/determines what? I really want for my photos to sync all as one between Google and my phone as it did for that last month, but I can't figure out how to do that. Also, I want it to not always revert back to the small caller ID photo in the corner after each sync. Any suggestions?
Anyone have any ideas? Any input at all would be appreciated.
I'm having the exact same problem! I'm really annoyed at the fact that you can't simply choose on "Settings" between Full screen and Thumbnail caller ID. It would seem pretty obvious...
I hope they change this any time soon!
I'm sorry that I don't have a solution... maybe Apple is aware of this issue, and they intend to keep that way so to "motivate" you to syincing your contacts through their paid MobileMe service.
Dude, it seems that you are quite experienced with it. Your discussion made me clear on some topics. Thanks for sharing.
