Only the NY flagship store had them in stock last time i checked. I was in DC and couldnt find any iphones...
Bought an iPhone yesterday in DC at my local AT&T Store they had quite a few in stock. The guy told me we had to activate it in the store (create the AT&T account) and then choose the plan via iTunes. I told him that the iPhone was a gift and that the reciever would create the account. It seems that they are cracking down on sales of the phones.

AT&T doesn't count... Anyway, when you said it was a gift did they sell you w/o activating right there and taking your SSN? Yeah, looks like they are indeed cracking down

Like above poster, if they give problems say it is a gift! And why would they make itunes home activation if they are going to start requiring it at the store? I'm sure you can haggle your way out of activating the phone at the store... (if it is a new policy)

Why? Maybe because initially it was difficult if not impossible to do a 5 minute software unlock at home. That's why.

Now that a functionally retarded monkey can do it, they are losing revenue (even if it's residual). See, Apple doesn't let AT&T make hardly anything off the hardware itself (boy does Apple though... lol)... AT&T makes it's $$$ off the ridiculous plan options it forces you into for two years.

If I were an AT&T Store I'd have a Kiosk set up just for activation. If it was a gift, I'd have the person either activate, or come back with the gifted person (maybe give them a nice "You're getting an iPhone" gift card or something heh...).

Bottom line is, it's their legal right to sell to whomever they deem fit.

Yea they sold it to me right there on the spot, people next to me also bought an iPhone not sure if they had to activate it in the store. They did not take down my SSN but my proof of purchase does have the Serial No. of the iPhone underneath the price etc.
