Default [Rumor] iPhone 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker

    From Engadget:

"by Ryan Block, posted Apr 25th 2008 at 3:26PM

So we've got it on authority that the second-gen iPhone is already well into testing, and numerous units are floating around in super secret pockets. A trusted source got a chance to check one out, here's what we've heard.

The first thing people will notice:

the 2nd gen iPhone will be about the same size and shape as the first gen.
It will, of course, have 3G. And proper GPS!
The most noticeable physical difference is back of the phone is no longer metal -- the whole thing is glossy black, from top to bottom.
The volume buttons are now chrome.
Because it's got a little less metal to deal with, it doesn't have quite as many angular edges.
The battery is (still) not removable.
The phone itself will be slightly thicker than the first gen device.
The headphone jack will no longer be recessed, and will finally be flush with the body.
The device itself uses roughly the same size and resolution screen as the first generation product.
No solid word on battery life or storage capacity.

It could ship (or be introduced) as early as July -- but it's worth noting that none of this is necessarily finalized, and any of it could change between now and its introduction. You really never know with Apple!"

Posted here long long ago. That black cover is not 3G iPhone. It's a protection case. I don't know why people still believe that picture is 3G iPhone. :iphone:

Apple isn't a company to make things thicker.

Since we are all guessing anyway, It's my belief that the 2nd gen iPhone will be thinner than the 1st gen phone, even with it's 3G modem and GPS built in.

I agree. it is bound to be thinner, and sleeker than the original iphone. I hope apple learns from the mistake if locking to ATT and O2 will lead to increased number of people not activating their iphones and potentially losing them millions in revenue.

I'd guess it's the same size or thicker.

By the way, the Titanium Powerbook was thinner than alumnium Powerbook G4s that replaced it.

What about the 5th Gen iPod 80GB version, which is considerably fatter than the 30GB version?

Wrong comparison. The 80gb succeeded the 60gb model and not he 30gb and both (60/80) are the same size.
