    Default Restoring sms.db Help Please!!!

Before I restored my iPhone, I made sure to back up the sms.db (all my text messages) file so I can restore it later. I was NOT updating my iPhone to a new firmware, I was just restoring my iPhone to 3.1.2.

My basic method of restoring sms.db is that I just replace sms.db file with my backed up one. But the problem that occurs is when I write a txt and when I tap on "Send", the program crashes and doesn't let me send/receive any text.

Once thing I noticed on a freshly restored iPhone is that the permission of the sms.db file is 0644. So what I did was, when I replaced it with my backed sms.db file, I changed the permission to 0777 so it would stop crashing on me.

The idea above worked perfectly fine. But I noticed adverse effect on my phone. Whenever I am txting now, the keyboard starts acting weird. When I am typing the keys are very off... For example if I type the letter "W" it going to type "Q". Not only, sometimes I experience "stick keys". It is so bad, I can't txt at all...

So what could be causing this problem and what is the "proper" way of restoring a backed up sms.db?

You did the right thing, it is permissions that are broken. You might want to check the permissions on the main sms folder and any subfolders.

0755 is generally good enough, 0777 is a security risk.

But the default permission is set to 0644. I noticed that the laggy keyboard/sticky keyboard/extremely inaccurate keyboard problems started occuring after I restored the sms.db file. Also, I think are there aren't nonkeyboard realated problems are occurring too.

Someone suggested me to leave the permissions to default (0644) but change the "group ownership" of the file to "mobile". I did that, but I am still have the same problem.

I am going to restore my phone again and start fresh and test out the keyboard while texting if I don't restore the old sms.db...

Yes the ownership (user and group) are very important. 0644 should be enough if the user/group ownership is correct. 0755 just adds execute permission which is not really required in this case.

Did the sms.db come from the same OS version?

Okay in order to test out my SMS problem I have arleady restored my phone 5-10 times already since last night... What a pain!!! lol

I haven't been able to fully test it out yet, but here are some few problems I noticed everytime I resotred my phone and DIDN'T restore the SMS file.

    1) Keyboard inaccuracy is random... I mean, every time I restore I have to put in user/pass for wifi, so just based on that, I can get a general idea of the laggyness and inaccuracy of the keyboard... I noticed that sometimes keyboard worked perfectly fine while other times it seemed very inaccurate.

    2) Sometime on the home screen, when I try to open the Phone app or settings app, it just doesn't open it. Like I know it senses my touch because the icon become a bit shaded, but it doesn't open. Instead is slides to the next page or the search page... Like for example, after a fresh restore in iTunes, I use blackra1n. Blackra1n takes me to home page, and the very frist thing I try to do is go to settigns to enable wifi. But when I touch the Settings icon, it won't open it, instead it slides to the second page of the home screen or sometimes to the search page.

So it starts to seem as if it might be a hardware problem??? And not a software problem?

It could be a hardware problem. Are you setting up the iPhone as new each time?

The fact that it happens only at random times keeps leading me to believed its not a hardware problem.

For example, I am currently running my iPhone after a fresh restore. I noticed problems first when I restored it, but everything is running smooth now.

I am too afraid to restore my sms.db file, I don't want to run int othe same laggy, sticky, inaccurate keyboard problems again... I am tried of restoring phone again and again...

I am wondering if anyone else that restores thier sms.db file experienced the same problem?

I use the same method to backup and restore sms....When i restore my iphone i copy sms.db in its folder and then type in mobileterminal:

    su (enter)
    alpine (alpine)
    chown -R mobile:mobile /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS (enter)
    (And then exit mobileterminal)

Thatīs to set the owners group, I do the same commands to Notes and AddressBook because sometimes when I restore the .db files I canīt write a note or add a contact.

But after restoring your phone, do you get issues such as laggy/inacccurate keyboard when texting?

I havne't restored my SMS.db yet and until now I haven't expereinced the problem. I am scared to restore it now because maybe if I do, I will start having problems again????
