changing imei is prohibited in every country and you are in real trouble if you are cought.

usually you can report a stolen device#s imei but you have to proof that it is yours.

Wouldn't it be really easy for police to catch the person who stole the phone just by matching the IMEI against the phone number in use?

    iPhone (OTB 1.1.1 / Currently 3.1)
    Unlock, activation, jailbreak: PwnageTool 3.1

^ I think IMEI and phone number are seperate from eachother. I don't think they have a relation between eachother. I may be wrong though. But doesn't the iPhone have somewhat of a tracking/gps device in it. I know when I lost a Samsung cellphone I had, I filed a police report and I got the phone back. I also live in Canada as well. But defenitly block the IMEI dude, so that asshole who took can't use the phone. And I'm sure that Apple can do something to that IMEI when it's connected to iTunes to tell you who the phone is being used by. Maybe it can retreive the IP of the computer that the device is currently connected to?? I'm not sure but I'm positive they'll be able to do something. Best of luck man.
    8GB Apple iPhone

    Firmware 1.1.3 w/ 4.6 Bootloader
    Fully unlocked.

report the serial to apple as stolen, they will blacklist it themselves...call up rogers and tell em the imei number...you may even be able to look at calls they placed and track it down...someone should make an app that runs in the background that you can check to see where your iphone is at all times....any ideas

    hi there,
i am working a gsm operator and i know that they can find the mobile number through the imei number, and it is also possible to finde the imei number through te mobile number, it is very very easy, but if you want to bloke the phone you have to go police and they will take your speech. then they will send the imei to all gsm operators and bloke the imei. that is the only way in my country.

Thats true, you can find your phone by IMEI, you think this is hard? No!
My friend's - friend working on GSM and he some time ago, told me: if you cnow your IMEI - your phone can be found, gsm network fix That IMEI and Phone number, then they give these dates to police and police call to this number, also GSM network give all the autgoing and ingoing numbers from that stolen phone number - and this person no way to escape.

Sorry about my english i think you got what i mean

But reason why many phone's connot be found,
    1. nobody try to found.
    2. This is beacause they changes IMEI's.
IMEI only you can change by hardware soldering some chips, (i don't cnow about iPhone, i think this is to hard) but anyway in New NOKIA's stolen phones are unlocking by replacing main chip (i cnow this)

note: i only offered to do it because i felt sorry for him because he had to pay a lot for it and it was a present for his son, i wouldn't do it if someone asked me to change it because they had a stolen one they wanted to sell!!
