Default Reception of SMS Message from your Operator/Bank -- what's your experience?

The following thread comes as the result of another one that was posted last night. I figured that I would restate the problem in a separate thread in an attempt to better understand the issues and learn more about your experieces with the following problem.

In short, it seems that under certain circumstances, the iPhone does not acknowlege/receive SMS messages that originate from either an Operator (i.e. a message informing you that you have a message or how to access your vmail from upon arriving in a foreign country) or a Bank (i.e. a daily balance updates), or a remote online service like Skype that allows you to send computer generated SMSs.

I'm wondering if the AT&T activated people out there can comment (re: the vmail notification, no need to comment since I know that this is not applicable).

How about those that have HW unlocked their phones? What is your experience?

For those of us who will software lock our phones and who receive automatic SMSs, this is really an important point and I'm at a lose for words regarding what could cause this to happen?

For me as soon i started using my iphone-turbosim unlocked- all my daily bank statements stopped, alerts from stock market stopped, alerts from the telecommunication company stopped, what i noticed that the common thing between those that the senders are not numeric , not numbers , but alphabetic, like QNB, QTEL, Ebroker, while the numeric senders like normal phone numers are working fine, i tried sending myself an sms from an online service and wrote a name in the sender and the iphone didnt show it, but when i sent the same sms to my nokia it poped out exactly as it is supposed to do.

Hum, very interesting. In Europe, messages from Operators or banks generally have numbers associated with them, like "34005" or "78890" as the sender, which means that according to your theory these messages should be received?
