Default Quick question about backing up data and restoring text messages.

So, I've been highly considering jailbreaking my iPhone after seeing and hearing so many good things about it. I understand that doing this will format my phone and that I will need to back up all my phone's data before doing so unless I want to lose everything. However, I like to keep all my SMS messages, as I like to occasionally read over them for various reasons, and potentially losing them in the format has been my only reason for not jailbreaking my phone. Now, I know that the text data is included in the backup file, but my research made me unsure of whether or not they would actually be restored along with everything else. Last night though, I read on the Apple Support page that SMS messages are part of the backup and that restoring the phone with the backup would restore everything exactly as it was. Now, I know it may be a tad dumb to still be confused after seeing that info on the official website, but everything else I had read still leaves me in need of some verification, which is why I am here asking for some assistance.

So, to make this short, I just want to know if I can use the backup I create before formatting and jailbreaking my phone to restore my texts afterward. Thanks in advance.

Oh, by the way, while I say I have done a little research, I am still quite unfamiliar with jailbreaking and such, so if you happen to have any advice to give to a newbie, I'd gladly take it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my iPhone is a 3G running 3.1.2 (7D11) firmware, if that makes any difference.

Yes you can do this.. backup via iTunes, jailbreak/restore iphone, then restore from iTunes backup. It will keep your SMS.

Well, I just jailbroke my phone, but it didn't cause my phone to format anything at all. Is that anything to be worried about by chance?

This is generally normal if you used redsn0w, blackra1n or quickpwn (only on OS 2.x)

These jailbreaks are designed to jailbreak an existing iPhone without reloading the OS.

Oh cool. Well damn, if I knew that, I wouldn't have hesitated to jailbreak for so long haha. Thanks for the help. It's much appreciated.
