Default [quick fix] My experience/solution for solving the 1604 error

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility if you screw up your phone any worse than it already is. That aside, I wrote this little guide in order to show people how I fixed my phone and hopefully this will help other people fix theirs too. Good luck!

Recently I tried to unlock/jailbreak my iphone on the 2.0 firmware using the how-to found here: (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/07/pwnage2-win-fix.html). Unfortunately, towards the end of the process I completely screwed up and bricked my phone. While trying to restore the phone using itunes 7.7 I kept on getting a “1604 error,” aka the 1604 error of death.
I searched online for a solution to this problem and sadly, I found none. I was terrified that I had accidentally screwed up some important code since I was using all this hacking software (winpwn, ziphone, boot neuter) to unlock the phone on 2.0. However, being as persistent as I am, I did not give up and tried a ton of different methods and ended up finding a solution.
All I did was follow this: (http://theiphoneproject.org/index.php/faq) guide on how to downgrade my iphone’s software to 1.1.4. The 1.1.4 ipsw I used can be found here: (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....2_Restore.ipsw). After following this guide I was able to successfully downgrade the software, however, my phone was once again locked in the ATT network. In order to remedy that problem, all I did was download the latest ziphone software from here: (http://download.ziphone.org/) and used the “do it all function.” After all this was done I once again had an unlocked iphone on 1.1.4 firmware! The moral of the story is, wait for the new unlocking software for the 2.0 firmware in order to avoid this kind of mess.
Hopefully this helps all the others out there who have iphones that give them the same “1604 error.” If you still can’t solve your problem, don’t give up and keep trying. Hopefully this will help someone fix their iphone! Persistence is the key to successful hacking!

PS: I know that downgrade how-tos are available all over the web. However, the point of this post is simply to demonstrate that using the downgrade method can potentially fix the 1604 error. Please don't make posts such as "omfg newb those down-greade how-to's are all over the web choob. kthnxbai."

    Thanks,

    Gill

No you obviously did not read, because if you notice, he's merely saying how he managed to get around the 1604 error. He's not, in any way, saying "omg ziphone blew my phone up."

If you read it, or even skim. You can see that he states he tried to jailbreak his 2.0 iPhone and screwed up near the end of the process. He then tried to roll back to 1.1.4 but kept getting the 1604 error when doing so. He then followed several different guides in order to get to 1.1.4, and then used ZiPhone in order to jailbreak/activate.

So please, read a topic before typing a badly written post that does not even deal with, nor contribute in any way, to the topic at hand. Your spelling is quite awful too.

All I'm saying is that I tried to fix the 1604 error Apple's way (i.e. using a different computer, usb port, re-installing, i-tunes, etc.) and that didn't work. So I tried some other methods and I found that downgrading the software worked. All I'm saying is that if someone else got this same error and wasn't able to fix it using Apple's suggested methods that this might be a possible solution to their problem.

After reading the post that you linked to, Ziphone may have been the problem. However that's besides the point. Like I said, and I'll repeat again, all I wanted to do was explain my situation and show others how I fixed my phone after I screwed it up.

All that said, after reading that post I would like to caution others when using Ziphone since many people have had problems with it. I would suggest that if someone who has the 1604 error like I did and who wishes to try to downgrade in order to fix it when you try to unlock your phone at the end use a different program (iLiberty, winpwn, etc.) instead of Ziphone.
