Default [Question] What does "Restore" actually do?

    Dear all,

Although I have seen some info on this site and elsewhere about the restore process, I am still a little unclear as to the actual effect of doing a full restore from DFU.

General question: What is the technical effect of a full restore from DFU?

First specific question: I understand that restoring does not affect the BL, but does it replace the BB at all? If I am on 1.1.2 with 4.02.13_G, does a restore to 1.1.4 automatically update the BB to the one that is present in 1.1.4? If I want to restore back to 1.1.1 (mine is a OOB 1.1.1) does it replace it with version 4.01.13? Are there any unwanted side-effects?

Second specific question: If I restore back to 1.1.1 (being on unlocked 1.1.2 using anysim 1.2.1u) does my unlock count go up or does a firmware restore re-initialise the unlock count? I originally unlocked my 1.1.1 using anysim 1.1.

    Many thanks,

    Alex

    Not that complicated.

Baseband will never be downgradet via a restore in iTunes. It will only be upgraded if a never version is present in the firmware you are restoring to.

So if you first restore to 1.1.4 and then 1.1.1, you will have 1.1.1 with baseband from 1.1.4.

DFU mode is used to restore to a frimware version lower than your current one, while normal restore mode only restores to same version of higher.

OK, thanks. So, unless one has a facility to enable the BB to be downgraded, you can never really "factory restore" an iphone that has had its firmware upgraded?

What about the unlock count? How is that affected by the restore process (if at all)?

    Thanks,
    Alex

    Thanks !

So, if you erase the baseband and install 1.0.2 firmware, you'll get the baseband wich is in 1.0.2 ???
