Default Problem with SMS / Text app - anybody know a solution?

Okay i tried searching but couldn't find anyone with a similar problem. Yesterday a friend of mine got a txt msg from some unknown person/company. After this txt msg was received he was no longer able to use the SMS function on the iphone. Basically the red circle says like 18 txt msgs (he had other regular msgs from known ppl), but when you click on the icon, the text app shows for a few seconds (you don't see any of the 18 messages) and then kicks back to the springboard after a second or so. This was under 1.0.2.

Is there a way to fix the txt issue? We also upgraded the phone to 1.1.1 from 1.0.2 Anysim using the unlock.no method. Everything was fine. Then my friend connected the phone to itunes and it prompts you to setup as a new phone or a profile that was last saved - he chose this 2nd method, so naturally all the txt messages came back and we have the same issue in 1.1.1 as we had in 1.0.2. He needed to do the restore profile to get his contacts/notes etc.

So is there a way to either fix this txt problem (perhaps he's not the first!) or is there a way to set the phone up as a new phone in itunes without having to do a full restore and then activate/jailbrake? I know this 2nd suggestion will lose his contacts etc - but I guess to get txt working again - thats the only choice if there is no way to fix the text app itself.

    Thanks for any help!

    search the forum for "sms.db".

He basically received an SMS with letters that causes sms.app to crash. So as long as this sms is in the sms.db file, sms.app will continue to crash.

Just make him delete the .db file (he will lose all SMSs). or take it onto a computer and use a sql editor to remove the offending sms then put the file back on the iphone.

He will first need to clean up the sms.db to remove the offending message or the entire database. He can use sqlite3. The table name is 'message'

Once he does that, on 1.1.1, you can use the SMS app fix (as pointed above). This will plant some files from 1.1.2 on your 1.1.1 phone which should fix the problem permanently.

Thanks for all the help guys .. yeah i'll sort out the database thing. Seems to be the easiest way to go. Glad to see it wasn't a bigger problem.
