In most cases there will be a hand-off from EDGE to a voice call (depending on the carrier) and the call will take precedence over your data connection. However this doesn't always happen and at times callers will get kicked to your Voice Mail if you're using EDGE data. Unfortunately short of UMTS/HSDPA (aka "3G" in GSM terms) there is no way to run data and voice traffic concurrently over a GSM network

It actually is dependant on your service provider, with the local vodaphone i couldn but they upgraded it to support iphone and not i can access both and recieve calls while browsing.

I know my Nokia N80 kicks me off GPRS when a call or text comes in. I'm with O2 here the the UK. Have you tried ringing your provider to see if they can change it?

It depends on the towers, there was an article on it at one point on hacktheiphone I believe. To sum it up quickly there are 3 types of towers nan 1,2,3. 2 and 3 can't give you a call while on edge 1 however can. Using field test the author had yet to find a type 1 on the att network.
I'm using fido and they have the type 1 towers for the most part it seems. The one by my house certainly is, it takes a long time to switch over though but I do still get the calls in the end.

Same issue here. They changed the tower setting here. a few weeks ago you couldnt recieve any calls. now everything is working smooth.
