will the (international) iPhone unlock ever come?!

Hello everbody,

I am from Germany and bought an iPhone from eBay - using it as a WiFi iPod, but hoping that the SIM lock will be hacked. Originally, it seemed that this will only be a matter of a few days - but as there's no solution yet, I really need an clear answer:

Do you think it will ever be possible that I can use my iPhone here in Germany as a real phone without an AT&T contract? Or is the SIM lock a hardware thing?

Til today, I was sure that the unlock will see the light of day. But now, as I had an intensive search on this board and the net, it's quite a desillusion ...

Would be nice if someone with the technical knowledge could answer my question.

NHF please.. but if you read the wiki report, you can see what the the dev team said themselves:

"As a side note, we'd like to clarify that we are not even close on giving up the full unlocking, as reported on some websites. We're still up and running, but we won't comment on a possible time line. If the unlocking is possible we'll eventually find it, so stay tuned :P "

Thanks for the answer. If the unlock time will come, I will gladly wait. It just would be nice to know in case it is impossible because of a HARDWARE SIM lock. I get more and more unsure if I should have waited for the European version ... But that's the price I have to pay for my impatience, I guess.

Just of it beeing a hardware lock doesn't make it less possible to be disabled :)
