VPN Connection possible?
Hello Iphoners :)
in university we have to log into a VPN - a virtual private network to get into the internet over the campus wifi-lan (wlan in germany). although the iphone offers basic vpn functionality, i don't know how to connect to this one..
we have to specify a groupname, a group-password. and after that we will be asked by the system to enter our username and user-password. the iphone software doesn't offer these inputs.
for example on windows i would use the cisco vpn client, which works fine. but on my iphone i couldn't simply install a new vpn client, could i?
is it possible to get the linux/unix version of the vpn-client and compile it on the iphone? does anyone have experience in this?
i mean, would be very cool to use my iphon-wifi-functionality in university..
any help appreciated!
best regards,
martin

It all depends on the type of VPN you need.
iPhone supports PPTP, that is basically PPP (point to point protocol over ethernet) and L2TP, that is IPSec with MS style authentication (no IKE).
So, if you need the uber VPN, that is IPSec with IKE as the key exchange protocol, then you are out of luck. In theory it's possible to compile the FreeBSD IKE daemon for the iPhone, but it's big project and since the OS X in the iPhone is stripped down and there is no kernel source for it, it's quite a challenging task.
So, the first task is for you: check the type of VPN you need.
