Tracking and tracing of IPhone

Hi I recently purchased an iphone off of Craigslist and was wondering if Apple would be able to trace whether or not my Iphone was stolen or legally purchased. I purchased it before I came to the realization that this could have been a possibility. It was suppose to be a xmas present but I want to make sure that it isn't stolen.

I am not technical enough to know whether the hardware and software allows apple to track phones or through the AT&T network. I don't want to give my friend this phone only later to have apple come and arrest her.

Please let me know your thoughts.

If it doesn;t have the box ( which obviously you can see the serial imei part no. and so on ) of course you have to be worried.
But if you had the box, no need to worry. You can tell them you recieve it as a gift from a friend.


Nobody will bring the box while they have the iphone on the road . lolz Unless That was their way of showing their gadget.

dude u sound like u are like thief, stole the phone, and trying to figure out if it can be traced!

it can be traced 100% the moment it is used! it has an imei number and imei numbers are sent to the network upon starting your phone, that means if your phone's imei number is reported stolen, and if wherever you are, there is a imei pool system for stolen devices, u would be in big trouble...

since u r giving it to ur gf, it wouldnt be a good idea... unless gift means selling your stolen phone to a friend...

i will be reselling my phone on craigslist and i will forget about this whole thing... I appreciate your help... even though u did call me a thief..

actually what I knew was the phone doesn't even need to be on. As long as the battery is in it (which in iphone's case, always in) it doesn't matter if you turn it on or off, they can track the phone.
Or maybe I am just watching too many Hollywood shit, I don't know :D
