Settings -> Carrier ?!
Ok...this may mean nothing...
But I was playing with the activation tool (Anderson Tech) get a Carrier option under Wi-Fi.
When I select it, I get a Loading... message and then a list of the 3 Carriers here in Sao Paulo, Brazil: Vivo, Claro and Tim, plus an Automatic option. None of them are selectable (gray).
Now, may be it will never be used, but there is indeed an option to select a Carrier, hidden in the firmware. I have no clue how to use it.
If someone wants to reproduce it, connect it to the Mac and:
1. Deactivate it using Anderson's tool (./tool --deactivate)
2. Power it off, holding the top button for 5 seconds and sliding the red arrow
3. Power it on (it will give you the Activate screen)
4. Instead of activating, slide to unlock, you will get the Emergecy call screen, dial 911. Since I'm not in US, it doesn't call any number, and just goes back to the Activation Screen
5. So now, activate it (./tool --activate a.plist)
6. Slide to unlock, go to settings and look under WiFi option, a brand new Carrier option
I just tried with my local carrier SIM, and does not get the Carrier option.
The 911 call also did not returned to the Activation Screen. So seems like you have to force a bug on the 911 call, that only happens with the at&t sim inserted
Well just another comment:
My iPhone now has a local carrier SIM AND it shows signal on the signal bar.
After a few minutes, it goes back to the earth screen and I get a message saying the SIM is not valid and the signal disapears.
If I call 911, the signal is back.
I'm still unable to place a call.
I dont know about the iphone but with any other phone when you have no signal on your network it piggy backs another network to make a 911 or 999 call in the UK.
I tried this with both a Vodafone 3G and a Telstra 3G card each and although it didn't give me a carrier option, it did give me full signal with each of the sim cards.
I'm in Australia, and there is a conversion on the network which means if you dial the emergency number from the UK (999), Australia (000), the USA (911) etc, it will be converted to the mobile net 112 emergency.
Well, I can safely say the iPhone works in Australia just fine, because I accidently called emergency services (eeek). Hello mister emergency line.
Anyway, after this 'accident', besides being stoked that the phone works in Australia, my signal bar went to full with my sim card in. I tried to make calls, but it just went straight away to the call failed screen every time. I also tried unchecking the 'add US prefix to dialling when outside of the USA' option and it made no difference.
So, emergency dialling definitely does work, and trying it gives you full reception instead of just telling you that you have an incorrect sim, but it still won't let you dial.
By the way, I could repeat the full signal everytime by dialling 911, then hanging up as soon as it started to try to connect to the network and before it had even started to ring.
Still haven't gotten that Carrier option yet, but I'll keep trying. Hope that was informative!
Spoot I activated my iPhone with At&t plan, here in Brazil I get Tim, Claro, Vivo with my Tim SIM Card.
But At RIO I did used my iphone at Oi Network, VERY WELL
Hey mate, do you have an active plan with AT&T, or did you only activate using the legitimate service?
