Nobody can say if unlock will be possible.
I thought one of the earlier status reports said - We know how to unlock the phone -

and yes, in the end, unlocking may not be possible. but they're giving it a go for you and the rest of us anyway. you really gotta respect that.

well unlocking will be possible, just looked at all the hacked software, including osx, windows, etc etc. the main wuestion is the time it takes, however if it still hasn;t been unlocked by the time it launches in the UK in december i think it will be soon after,
since the UK iphones will be on O2 (i believe that was the most up to date info) the software for simlock on the iphone will be different? and from the differences i think will be easier for them to figure out how unlocking works.
Waiting for the iphone to be unlocked in December would totally contradict all the confidence that was all over regarding unlocking the iphone in the beginning. But I guess many underestimated Apple
