[Question] how to use iphone in japan...

hi, i am on a locked but jailbroken att iphone and am headed to japan in a week. i have a couple of questions.

1) I was wondering if i should simply create a pwned firmware that is unlocked and restore my phone with it so i would be able to buy a local sim to use in tokyo. Would i be able to return to the phones original state (locked) by simply restoring with a locked but jailbroken pwned firmware or is there more to it than that?

2) can anyone recommend what type of simcard to get in tokyo that will be fairly cheap and also allow me to use the internet (edge, though i dunno if they have edge in japan?)? can i get on an open wifi network pretty easily in tokyo?

3) are there any apps like metro (singapore subway map app) for the tokyo subway?

4) will i get laughed at for having such a low-tech phone compared to the agg shit thats the standard there?

and finally if you know of any cool tech shops or crazy arcades to check out while im there you can let me know as well. Im super excited to go, thanks to anyone who helps.

hello sir, i dont think that you can use your iphone in japan.:( . correct me if iam wrong.:confused: even you unlock that phone u cant use it. only in japan but any country you free to use it.:D

ahh really? they dont have pre-paid sims in tokyo like they do in europe?

Actually inside the firmware, Japan have been a supported country from almost the beginning.

But the thing is, no carrier in Japan runs on a GSM System, only 3G / WCDMA, so doesnt matter what you do on the iPhone, you still wont get signal. :p

To get a mobile phone SIM in Japan requires Citizen ID Card or Alien ID Card (Alien means local living foreigners)

3, I believe not since the iPhone doesnt operate in Japan.

4, Mobile Internet is extremely cheap in Japan, people will not know what you are talking about when you say you will SMS them as they have been using email on their mobile phones or PDAs for along time now.


Most phones you find in Japan will not work outside of Japan because they run on a system which is unique to Japan. Unless you get 3G / WCDMA phones, but you may have a hard time buying it since it may be operator locked, most are and you need to be a local to buy one.
