Query: Using EDGE on Vodafone

I have a software unlocked iPhone i've been using for a while now. Its running on a prepay system through NZ vodafone, you put credit on it etc, and can only use the credit you have put on. I spent the credit i have for the month, and am running on $0.00 dollars. Yet whenever i use google maps/safari over EDGE, it works absolutely fine. And i dont seem to be getting charged. At all. This is quite awesome, really, but im wondering why it is happening. Im in no danger of getting a massive internet bill because of the way the prepay system works.

Sorry, i guess this is more of a Network question than an iPhone question. Still, i hope someone knows whats up?

What have you used for your EDGE settings on the phone ?

i made them all blank

Username:

Password:

etc.

Are you sure you are accessing EDGE and not a standard Wi-Fi network? - Have you got a small 'e' and does it turn blue in color - not blue not connected.

I can't get mine running in Australia - Vodafone here says to use live.vodafone.com as the APN

I have noticed the same, my guess is that its accessing the same system as vodafone live which is free. Vodafone NZ doesn't have the iphone on their system and all smart phones on NZ GSM have to be on data plans, so to have a smartphone that can access the Internet on prepay is taking advantage of the free vodafone live browsing - thats just a guess though. Oh yea and go the All Blacks

I see, i see. That makes sense. Yeah it's definitely on EDGE. Well that's good news, free internet anywhere i like. I hope they dont figure this out any time soon.
