please help me retrieve data from iphone 3gs!

Hi, please can anyone help? I have an iphone 3gs which yesterday decided to crash on me. Ive tried to force a restart but the phone is freezing on the apple logo. I can reset it through itunes but the problem i have is that I do not have a backup of my data as my backup is on my ex boyfs mac. Is there anyway I can retrieve data? I'm not bothered about apps but photos, contacts, music and texts all very important to me. If there is a way to retrieve data should I reset first to get the phone working?.. sorry if I sound stupid but I'm not techy at all:woz: Please can anyone help....I feel lost without my phone! Thanks.
