But are you sure? I'm almost certain I've heard accounts of people on Optus using GPRS.
Try going to: Settings > General > Network > EDGE
Type in the Optus APN: internet
You may need a data plan for it to work, but it should be possible to get at least slow GPRS data on Optus.
If it really doesn't, then Telstra Pre-Paid SIM starter packs are available for $25, with $25 credit to be used over 6 months, and you can add a data pack to them ($16 for 10 MB, $29 for 70 MB, etc).
After spending so much on the iPhone and going to the trouble of getting it unlocked, it would be silly not to be able to use data through it. For me, that's just as important as making a phone call (checking email on the run is so convenient).
Im on the $49 telstra pre paid cap and that gives me $200 worth of calls to any number and $50 Telstra Cap Bonus that I can use To ring any other Telstra mobile and Can be used for Data as well and I can also by the data packs if I need it :D
Here is the full price chart for data Plus Pack if any one is interested :)
1MB Browse pack, 30 day expiry for $5
3 MB Browse pack, 30 day expiry for $8
10 MB Browse pack, 30 day expiry for $16
70 MB Browse pack, 30 day expiry for $29
200 MB Browse pack, 30 day expiry for $59
I agree dotmike The data is just as important The full email on the fly is going to be handy
just wondering what the speed is like on the GPRS on iphone on Australia network.
I'm currently with optus, on my contract it states 2.2cents/kb for WAP over GPRS
and it also says 0.55c/kb for wireless internet.
So which one will i be charged?
