So my iPhone isn't turning on and it's stuck on recovery mode, I've tried plugging it in to the computer and holding down the off/on switch along with the home button and the apple logo won't even come up and iTunes won't complete the recovery, I get the error message;
'The iPhone could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (1604)'
I've been searching online for an answer and can't find anything. Can anyone help me out?

Without restore logs of the failure it's hard to help you. We can't help you if you don't help us.
I'm having this same problem too. Only i went to update mine on itunes and in the middle of the update my laptop shut off when i turned it back on it told me i could not update anymore that it found an iphone in recovery mode. Then it tells me I have to restore it so I click to restore and it will start and then get stuck at this black lit up screen. Stays there for awhile then the error message pops up error 1604 and nothing... really would like to firgure it out too.

First and foremost, please don't post the logs directly into the thread. The thread that explains how to post clearly requests that you house them on a third party site like pastebin to make reading them easier. As always, please, take the minimum steps to make it easier for us to help you...
Regardless, the specific error you have here:
is extremely common and is caused by you attempting to restore a version of iOS to the device that you do not have SHSH files for, or if you have SHSH files, your hosts file hasn't been updated to point at either your local machine (if you're using TinyUmbrella) or at Saurik's server if you cached your SHSH with Cydia.Code:2011-08-29 20:49:55.960 [3692:1808]: amai: AMAuthInstallRequestSendSync: failed tss submission: This device isn't eligible for the requested build.
In any case, do yourself a favor (seriously, this is important to know) click the 'SHSH' link in my signature to learn about them. If you don't have them, you can only restore an iPhone 4 to 4.3.5 right now. Since this has been discussed over and over, I'm not going to go into the details as to why. Just learn about SHSH, save any that you can now, and save them in the future, or you'll end up having a hard time being jailbroken...
There's most likely nothing wrong with the phone other than the fact that you're trying to restore a version that Apple is no longer signing.

I suggest that you try to restore your phone by first putting it into DFU mode. In order to put your Iphone/Ipod into DFU mode.Quote:

OK so I was having the same problem, I got mutiple errors some were (1604) THEN (9) and also (8 and 2) :confused: then what I had to do as my lead was a little dodgy I tried restoring with a newer lead and that solved my problem, just hoping I have everything backed up to icloud, hope this will be as easy for some of yous as it was for me!!!:)
