Iphone Silent Switch Broken - Firmware 2.0

I have a first generation Iphone with a broken silent switch, it's broken in the "silent" position so I can't hear my phone calls ring.

Is there a Software solution to simply disable the switch's function?

I did a search and there is an older thread here, but the solution only works for Firmware 1.

Is my only option to crack the thing open and physically fix the switch?

did you try turning the phone on and off? it happened to me a couple of times and I solved it by doing that...

the silent app has not been ported over yet
your only option now is to turn down the volume or use air plain mode
