iPhone firmware update

Ok, here is the questions I have:

1) Does iTunes push firmware update to iPhone automatically when phone plugged in the computer or it asks for the user's permission to install?

2) If iPhone was hack-activated (no AT&T contract) or unlocked (theoretically), will firmware update overwrite these changes?

Since there haven't been any firmware upgrades yet, I can't give you a guaranteed answer, but odds are that it updates like the iPod, where it checks weekly for updates and asks the user if they want to install them.

i would think that the firmware updates would not lock the iphone back to AT&T, since apple is going to release the iphone in other countries as well. so its unlikely the firmware updates can;t lock it back to a single network. and its unlikely apple is going to have specific firmware updates tailored for each network.

Well, it's not that unlikely since it will be German version of iPhone's software for Germany anf French version for France. I'm sure it will be localized.
