iPhone 3gs restore trouble

Hi,

I'm a complete newbie to this forum so please bear with me.

My phone started heating up recently whilst using google maps and I got a message saying I need to restore the phone before I can make phone calls again. I tried and it failed to restore giving me an unknown error 23. Then I tried again by putting the phone into DFU mode and it looked promising - apple logo with progress bar appearing to be 100% completed - then I got a new error code 1002.

So digging around forums hasn't got me any further so I wandered if anybody could advise. Details are:

iTunes 10.3.1.55
Previous iPhone Os version: Sorry, can't remember - this would be original version that shipped when I got it 2 years ago.
Windows XP SP3

Hardware problem, not fixable via software. You are now the proud owner of an overpriced iPod touch (probably without wifi /bluetooth)

At 2 years old, it sounds like it's out of warranty - so your only option is to pay Apple $199 to get an out of warranty replacement (this is a flat fee - so it isn't really that good a deal for a 2 year old device)

There are threads explaining how to restore the device using custom IPSW (and patched iTunes to get around the error 23) - you may need to have saved your SHSH for this to work.
