Future OTB unlocking and activation.

Hey guys,

This is rather a n00bish question for many of you who are already in-the-know about the Iphone, but here goes.

My birthday is coming around the corner and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an Iphone. Problem is, i've really lost track of whether recent firmwares are activatable and unlockable.

So here the question: If I go this Sunday to buy and Iphone from the apple store, will I be able to activate and then unlock the phone and avoid the god-awful contract?

Help appreciated!
