Fixing wifi greyed out without circus.

If your prefrences show no wifi / greyed out.
Forget about the circus of going to 1.1.4 and all the way back.
Loosing everything.

I was able to go from Greyed out back to working with this simple trick.

Run winpwn. Have Itunes 7.7
Take it thru the moves. It dont matter what options you use because your not going to even use the custom ipsw

Follow winpwn thru to the point where you see the ready to restore custom ipsw at this point you just do hard reboot.

Your wifi should be back (No longer Greyed out)
And all your apps + settings should be intact.
Note this worked for me.
I have a 2nd gen phone and was on 2.2 Firmware.

This was just luck... winpwn does't do anything to the iphone...
