Firmware an US iPhone into an European iPhone?

Once the iPhone hits the market in Europe (Nov 9th), will it be possible to take an iPhone from the US and simply take the Baseband-Firmware from an European model and write it to the US model?

Why would anyone do this?

a) They've already bought an iPhone in the US and would now like to use it officially including Visual Voicemail and Dataplan.

b) To save money! The iPhone is about 100 Euros cheaper in the US.

I would assume that the firmware of all iPhones worldwide will be exactly the same, but that the Baseband-Firmware will differ. Is that assumption correct?

Would it then be possible to take the baseband-firmware from one iPhone and put it on another?

since the new firmware is with international keyboards etc. I think it'll be the same firmware, contract just depends on the country you choose (just like with the itunes music store), but of course, I can be wrong...

but what about the pre installed SIM?
if you buy a US versin you have the ATT sim, with the informations of the ATT network, not the t-mob/o2

so, software related, i think it would be possible, but since those have different SIMs you might get some troubles. or maybe just ask your provider

There is no need for such athing as a European and a US update package as the only limitation, the whitelist of provider to allow is sitting in a area of the bb, outside the secpack allowed flashable area. everything else is interchargable.

So Sam, are you saying it will be easy to transfer a US purchased iPhone into a fully functional European iPhone or almost impossible?

I'm very interested in this as it will determine if I keep my current US iPhone or sell it unlocked and wait for the UK release.

ummm dude, with new fw, they add the carrier menu, and u can pick t-mobile Germany or watever and put that sim in. thats wat ive heard. there is no 'uk' and 'us' Fw, its all the same thing.

The carrier menu is only for roaming when in another country.

note to all: nobody knows anything definitive about the EU iPhone..

It would make sense for Apple to ship the exact same hardware. But there's still a chance they will pull a Nintendo on us and ship the same product but with different hardware (even though that hardware will behave the same as every other iPhone, it will mean a different unlock process for instance).

For those that doesn't know what nintendo did: they have shipped 3-5 different kinds of Wii's, changed the chip people exploited to be able to play backups.

the carrier menu already exists since 1.0.0. It's there, as mentioned, when you're roaming and allows you to manually choose your operator when outside of your country.
