Have you ever heard of a firmware update that can increase the iPhone capacity?

3G iphone with 16 GB plus replaceable battery... will release end of July. Existing iphone will get new fw release 1.2.
What exactly is 3G? I've heard the name a billion times...
its the faster internet network offered by ATT in certain locations. Not offered in all cities. Is expanding but not that great of coverage at the momment.

it would be pretty annoying if a 3g or gps model came out for all those who bought early, with an 18mth contract, 16gb is probably the safest bet

3G just means "3rd Generation" and for the most part is shorthand for any number of 3rd generation cell phone technologies. The advantages of 3G networks are that you can get pretty good data connections.
iPhone currently uses a 2.75G (little more than halfway between 2G and 3G) protocol called EDGE. While it is actually a 3G technology, most of us refer to it as 2.75G or 2.5G because it isn't very fast. (seriously, Wikipedia backs me up)
In the US, AT&T is building up a 3G network using the UMTS/HSDPA technology. It's taking them a hell of a long time because what they're literally doing is changing from TDMA/GSM-based network, to a whole-new-from-the-ground-up CDMA-based network.
In the US, Sprint and Verizon deployed their 3G upgrades over 3 years ago. It's known as EVDO.
While I have your attention, it's beneficial for you all to stop referring to Sprint and Verizon's network type as CDMA and instead call it EVDO, since UMTS/HSDPA is based off CDMA but not compatible with 1xRTT/EVDO. Makes you sound more intelligent in front of wireless engineers too :)
