DFU restore gives itunes error 9, unable to restore or jailbreak/unlock
I am attempting to unlock/jailbreak a 8gb original (non-3g) iphone. The phone is a friends of a friend of my sisters. The original owner got a 3g back in July, discarded this one (into the closet) at that time (iphone not updated to 2.0+, presumably?), until my sisters friend decided she wanted to unlock it. Not sure what she used but she attempted on a Mac. She did mention random-sounding websites so she may have ended up with something sketchy. She states that after all kinds of problems she was able to get it to work but only for an hour. After about an hour, it kicked into what I can only deem a perpetual restore mode.
I attempted to update/downgrade to different firmware versions (itunes-downloaded and shift-restore) but itunes always hangs on "waiting for iphone." A DFU restore attempt to 2.0 or 2.2 gives me an itunes "error 9" shutdown. Yes, I am sure I am in DFU mode and not just basic restore - I have used the http://limitededitioniphone.com/how-...into-dfu-mode/. Anyone know what error 9 means?
I have attempted all of this using itunes 7.5, 7.7 and 8.0.2, and frequent uninstalls and re-installs.
When I look at the itunes updater logs, I consistently see that the process gets stuck at Operation 28 (it says Operation 28 progress -1). Anyone know what this means?
Occasionally, an attempt with winpwn to 2.0.0 will work. However, as soon as I use cydia the iphone will crash and go back into perpetual restore mode. I have attempted Quickpwn but cant get too far because it often crashes at various stages.
Anyone have any thoughts? I have invested about 30 hours into this process without much results; any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. regards, dan
