A community "iFund" for freeware developers

I was wondering if people thought it would be a good idea to set up an account to cover the $99 distribution cost that Apple charges for developers of community favorite freeware.

Maybe have weekly votes (or whenever there is enough fundage in the account) to allocate funds to cover this cost. I suppose this may be premature, seeing as who knows what the distribution situation will be like once 2.0 comes out, but I would think this would be a nice gesture to a hard working developer who wants to go "legit" and score a bigger audience.

I just think it's kind of crappy for someone to have to toil over some app, then have to pay for the right to give it to people.

I agree with this, but i can see developers turning round and charging for their app too. Sure if they want to release it for free, then its more then a good idea.
