[ATT Service] iPhone 2.5G with no data plan?

I assume this has been asked and answered 1000x, but I cannot find anything with the search post december 2007.

Can I use an iPhone with my ATT plan but not be forced to use an iPhone data plan? I only want to use WiFi and not edge.

I would assume that unlocking the iPhone and using my current sim card would be the first step, but are there other steps involved to not be charged for a data plan that I don't want?

I think you can after you signed up but i think i read some where along time ago that someone cancel there data after they signed up for a contract

If you have no existing data plan, you will not be charged automatically with an Iphone with edge capabilities. It will only work if it is switched on, which means you are paying. If you have an existing sim, with data, unlock iphone, cancel data plan, and you are good to go!

I realize that all you need to do to use any AT&T SIM with an iPhone is a Jailbreak. If you use a jailbroken iPhone 2G on ATT while having edge disabled, is there any chance they will detect an iPhone by IMEI and force you to pick up the data plan?

AND yes you can use an at&t card without a data plan and have ur phone officially activated
or u could just unlock it and do whatever the shit u want

Have R_ogers Sim card installed but i signed up one year ago as a pay as you go customer...no data with a pay as you go....i just find a Hot spot for Wi-Fi and i can search the internet and not get charged a cent...

That's good to hear. AT&T won't force me to keep the data plan even if I activate it officially through iTunes? That's news to me...

I'm going to be getting a phone that is under warranty. Pwnage and iLiberty are both fully reversible, right? (i.e., there is no way for Apple to tell that the phone was unlocked if I revert to factory setting?)
