Question Previously unlocked iPhone, now on legal network

I'm not sure how to word this question. I've searched the forums and google but my search may not be worded correctly, so I apologize if this has been asked already.

We all know that prior to the release of the iPhone in the UK, people were using unlocked iPhones on the O2 network. So, my question:

Did the 1.1.2 firmware release, update the iPhones to allow O2 sim cards to work without an unlock? I'm asking because I'm on the Rogers Wireless network in Canada with a 1.0.2 unlocked phone. In the future, I'm sure the iPhone will be released in Canada. I want to know if I re-virginize my iPhone (properly), when that release day does come, will my iPhone then allow Rogers SIM cards to work?

Weird wording. If there is an answer somewhere on the forum, please point me there. I appreciate any help from any and everyone! Thanks.

it's actually somewhat of a good question - Similarly when the iPhone is released in Europe and locked to Orange, how can the same fw update lock to AT&T and orange at the same time?

I've been searching for the same thing you have as I'm in the same situation. I would gladly lock my phone to Rogers to enable updates and all the features once the phone makes it to Canada.

I think it all depends on how rogers treats the iPhone when/if it comes out in canada. Because so far it seems that the only sim cards that will work with out any modification to the iPhone are ones that have been attached to the carrier on some kind of "iPhone plan". Even though you may be on o2 or AT&T you still need to "hactivate" your iPhone to work with the sim unless you have signed up for one of the specific plans intended for the iPhone. This does not involve the unlocking process for the baseband but only a fake activation process. You only need to unlock the baseband if you feel like using the phone on non-supported carriers.

well ive been asking the same ? but nobody seems to have a solid answer... my 2 cents is that i dont think its possible.. i still think the phone is locked to a certain provider sold in that country...HOWEVER i could be wrong with the new 1.1.2 phones with the new bootloader.. but nobody seems to know for sure... the reason why im saying with the new boot loader is because the firmware is already pre configured to work in the countries that the phone is either available or going to be available and rogers is preconfigured on it...but we definately need someone with a locked ATT or a locked 02 to try to swap sim cards and try to activate it using itunes...

hi, im from germany and this was / is may situation:
I am using T-Mobile Germany as many years.
I had a 1.1.1 from the US > jailbreak and anySim > works fine on t-mobile germany.
There was only the SMS issue - Voicemail notification not working.

then the 9. november came and the 1.1.2 (and official iPhone launch in Germany)
so i made an upgrade to 1.1.2 and the jailbreak and unlock break up..
but with conecting to iTunes i could activate the iphone with my existing t-mobile contract. i had just only to change to the iPhone plan.

so now i am back in jail ;-) with t-mobile and everything works fine.... even visual voicemail.

well... since there is only 1 person who has done just that.. i just wanted to make a comment on this.. before i ran jailbreak under 1.1.2 i decided to stick my rogers sim and connect it to itunes 7.5 and this what i got.. THIS SIM IS NOT SUPPORTED BY APPLE YET or something like.. i forgot what it said exactly but basically lxchris
is right.. i think as soon as the service provider has a deal with apple and the phone is released u can then update to the latest firmware to that day and use itunes to activate and go on a multi year contract... so what im thinking is anybody can buy an iphone where its sold and go on any contract with their contries sims... so anyone from germany can buy an iphone from the states and activate it in itunes 7.5 and fw 1.1.2 with the german t-mobile contract....and the other way around
this makes perfect sense why apple would do that... to them it makes no differnce where you bought the phone... they make money on the iPHONE itself so it doesnt matter where its being bought.. and after activating it with a multi year contract makes them even better off since they are getting a cut of your price plan...
so now for all you canadians out there using rogers.. i think as soon as the iPHONE comes to canada.. which will be soon.. (i know someone inside rogers...)(and plus 1.1.2 already supports canada) will be able to activate using itunes and go on a contract and use their existing unlocked iphones as they were locked to rogers.. and bought from a rogers retailer ... thats just my 2 cents.. and i think this is exactly the smartest thing for apple to do because there are a ton of iphone users in canada who already purched the phone from the states, making a profit for apple, and since rogers is the best gsm provider in canada, it would be even better if you were able to go on a plan with the same phone...

now another question comes to mind...is the new firmware actually locked?? or maybe it gets locked when you activate it using itunes...lxchris what happenns to your phone when you plug your original att sim in it?? what exactly does it say.. if it says invalid sim then apple has a perfect way of unlocking the phone.. it gets locked to the sim that u r activated it to... and when u buy an unlocked phone from tmobile for 999euros then your imei gets registered in the system and when u activate it using itunes yet again... it lets u use any sim card in it...

well this is all just speculation.. so dont yell at me if im wrong.. but i really think that i could be right on this.. and anyone who has tried activatiing their previously unlocked phones on supported networks please let us know how it was done...
