Default post apple firmware update, how to unlock?

    hello,

i have a question. once apple starts shipping the new iphones with the newer firmware than 1.0.2, will we be able to go back to the 1.0.2 in order to perform the unlock? can anyone suggest what the basic steps might be to perform this?

    thanks.

As of right now, and based on the hacking work being done on the iPod touch, the answer is no. If the 1.1 update matches that of the iPod touch, it will be very difficult to crack, if at all. You should follow the ipod touch hacking over at tuaw, if they hack that then it might be possible to break the next firmware.

So far there's never been an unhackable device, but we'll see.

I understand that nobody knows about the new firmware update, but my question is if apple start to ship with the new firmware, is everyone out of luck until until a new unlock is hacked? or people with the new firmware can somehow revert back to the 1.0.2 and do the unlock just as they do now. i was planning on waiting another month to buy an iphone, but if i wait too long and apple ships with the new firmware, should i buy my iphone now ?

If you are so worried about unlocking the phone in the future, the iPhone is not for you. Get another phone because it is a permanent cat and mouse game no matter when you purchase the iPhone.

Apple must be in a funny position at the moment...

They must surely be watching their sales skyrocket as a result of the unlock being widely available. Look at how many people here have posted, "I'm expecting my iPhone to arrive tomorrow..."

They must know that a large number of the sales aren't being activated on AT&T.

Yet Apple is thought to be about to break the unlock with a new firmware release, which will most likely hurt sales.

And if they break the Installer.app software by locking the iPhone down in the same way as the iPod touch, it will hurt sales even more, as many iPhone lovers will stop recommending them and showing cool stuff to people.

It's like aiming a gun at the foot, cocking the hammer, getting ready to fire...

To my knowledge, current attempts at downgrading the firmware has failed. iTunes usually complains and says the iphone is running a more up to date firmware and will refuse to downgrade.

As for the cat and mouse game, i think that's a bit of a misnomer. For everyone with a hacked 1.02 or lower iphone right now, they merely need to not update to the 1.1 firmware. I suppose it's still a cat and mouse game, but the hackers (i'm not sure if they'd be the cat or the mouse?) would be in another room working on a slightly different problem.

so, any guess when Apple will start ship out iPhone with version 1.1 FW?
I am using iPhone right now, and planning to purchase few more for family members at the end of October (because I am not in the States at this moment). Is it safer to purchase iPhone now and stock them, or wait and take the risk?
    Thanks
