Default Possible Application idea - EDGE Disable Button or App

    Hello All,

I have a possible application idea for someone to work on. It would be really nice to have an app for the iPhone that would disable edge and then reenable it when needed. I have found the "Disable EDGE" thread but often I am traveling and would like to be able to just turn it on and off from my phone without the need to bring along a laptop just to perform this simple task. The idea with the iPhone is being able to travel without a laptop.

    Thanks for considering.

I've been thinking about something along the same lines so that I could enable EDGE if an emergency popped up but would have it disabled the other 99% of the time. From what I've seen, this could be handled via a simple shell command executed via TAPP or by modifying the iSwap application slightly. The only prerequisite for these approaches would be to have two copies of the config file that sets up the EDGE connection: one with the connection disabled, one with the connection enabled.

Yeah, that kind of app would be extremely helpful.

Does anyone know if it is possible to edit the prefrences.plist file using the Finder app and the TextEdit app on the iPhone? I have not been able to get it to open the prefrences.plist file even when I have "protect system files" turned off.

I am able to get this working by keeping two copy of the preference.plist file in the same directory. One was named on.plist with the working wap configuration and the other nonfunctional one was kept as preferences.plist. When I need to enable edge I switch the files using terminal 'mv' function which you will need to add your iphone. So 'mv' preferences.plist to off.plist and on.plist to preferences.plist to enable edge when needed. After that restart your iphone and edge should work. To disable edge again just reverse the process.

Here is another thought. Based on the screen shots taken from an unlocked phone it looks like there is a hidden function on the iPhone to allow someone to change their data settings through the iPhone GUI. Engadget mentioned that this showed up in the 1.0.1 release of the firmware. Has anyone found a way to unhide this ability without unlocking the phone?

Here are the URLs to the image files:

I have $20 for the first person that makes an app to easily disable edge and then reenable it when needed from the iPhone without needing to use any coding on my part (sorry I'm not a programer or UNIX wiz). The app should also be made freely available (others can make donations if they would like) and installable through AppTapp Installer. PM me if you are interested and able to pull this off.

On my iphone, in settings -> general -> network -> edge, I can set the edge parameters. I just remove one character to the apn so the phone can't connect. When I need edge, I just add the character again. But the best would be an app that detect if a network connection is required by any other application and displays a popup asking: "would you like to connect to edge".
