Default Pop mail account - outgoing mail problem (o2 Ireland)

Unlocked 1.02 upgraded to 1.11 then to 1.12. Everything is working fine.
I am in Ireland on a bill pay with o2

I have set up a pop email account on my iPhone.
The incoming is working fine but the outgoing wont send at all.
I keep getting the following message when trying to send a mail...

Cant Send Mail - Check the account settings for the outgoing server "smtp.o2.ie"

In my outgoing settings i have the following...
    smtp.o2.ie:25
    username (email account ID)
    password (email password)

in advanced settings i have the following for outgoing...
    Use SSL - OFF
    Authentication - Password
    Server Port 25

    Am I doing something wrong?
I spoke to o2 this morning and as helpful as they were they werent able to sort me out. they did confirm the outgoing port SHOULD be 25, they asked me to try it with SSL both on and off but still gave me the same error... She did suggest that perhaps the unlocking process could be an issue and could be the culprit!

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Or is there a way to ammend this by SSH'ing into the phone?

Are you unable to send mail using the EDGE network or when on WiFi or both ?

smtp.o2.ie won't work on a WiFi network but will when you are on the o2 EDGE network.

I am Ireland o2 also but use smtp.com as I travel quite a bit and got sick of having to re-enter smtp addresses every time I used a different ISP.

I have no problems sending mail on either.

    Hi Guys,
I had an issue whereby I could not send email using the smtp server supplied by my DSL provider when not connected to my DSL. This was a relay 500 error. My email hosting company provided me with an alternative smtp server, not network dependant and all is was working.
I have seen this on both my laptop and my iPhone. Seen on home wireless, BT Openzone and EDGE/GPRS.

Yes, but you need to subscribe to smtp.com and assign it to your eMail address.

You do not need to enter a user and pass in your smtp settings (thats only for SSL), you simply assign your smtp server as smtp.com

It costs about $50 a year but you can use it for your laptop or pc too.

If you use many different ISPs, its well worth it.
