1. As croatsensation1 mentioned, the antenna is on the bottom - the black bit that's the other side of the home button. So you could try holding it differently.
2. I've noticed that powering off the phone (not just sleep, full power-off) sometimes makes it find more towers. I don't know why this is the case, but at work I was getting a horrible signal for weeks - while my Nokia was fine - and then I power cycled my iPhone and the signal immediately jumped several bars and I get great reception there ever since. And then again, I traveled to California last week and had the same problem out there - and then power cycling it fixed it again.
3. On the Settings -> Carrier screen, make sure it's set to automatic. On mine, it was set to T-Mobile only when I checked in California last week. Changing it to automatic seemed to help.
that's really strange hold the phone like "pig bone".
My iPhone comes from one of th first (I've bought it in July) and I have this issue since begining. Antena and possibly comm module is very week.
I am living on the edge of my provider signal and I am reachable when my SIM is in other headset, but not with iPhone.
Today I see it like advantage (I've put in my company SIM and nobody disturb me)
But now I had some other iPhone in my home and with much stronger signal of same provider. It seams that it has been improoved in time of new production.
Anyway all smartphones have issue with signal strangth.
And it could also be solved by FW (I hope).
