Thank you for this. Very informative.
I have finally managed to get a terminal installed by patching AppTapp so instead of installing the Installer application, it installed Terminal.app instead
running bbupdate gives me a lot of retries (10 I think in total) and failing with a message saying that I don't have the proper bootloader and install at least 1.0.
bbupdater -v would give me a timeout error.
I had to delete the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist for bbupdater to even start.
I have just unsoldered the red wire of the battery and will leave it overnight. I'm rather pissed off with myself as I didn't pay attention and I let the soldering pane melt some of the label on the battery. No more "can't tell this iphone has been opened"
I'm starting to suspect that I'm screwed with the baseband chip and that I damaged it somehow. Not sure on how this started, as I got the 1011 error after opening the iPhone and trying to reflash it with iTunes. Didn't even perform any hardware mod on it !

E next to the signal bar ?
I got a E in box next to the signal bar, what's that?
1. updated to iTunes 7.4.2
2. restored to firmware 1.0.2
3. activated with INdependence 1.1.1 (still NoWiFi, 0049IMEI)
4. installed a Terminal and binkit-0.6 onto the iPhone
5. launchctl unload /.../com.apple.CommCenter.plist
6. bbupdater -f ICE03.14.08_G.fls (OK)
7. reboot
8. minicom -s (tty.baseband)
9. minicom (AT OK)
a small E in Blue Box appeared next to the signal bar, What's that? Is it a Error?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

yeah i got that too right before i bricked mine. That "E" is the edge connected symbol, and I think the reason it shows up is to mess with you right before your phone dies
. Just kidding, I actually don't know why the edge symbol comes on at this step. Probably just the firmware freaking out or something.

Thanks for warning that.
I better stop here before I brick it,
What's next then?

Just flashing with bb updater can brick nothing, dont be afarid. The bootlaoder is impossible to erase, it will ever be repairable.
BUT to restore 0049 IMEI error, simple fls restore wont work! You need to reflash the NOR image as I discribed before. The corrupted area is in a area, you cannot access with your fls files.

After reboot, E disappeared.
If I understand it right, next I suppose to do
10. compile new testcode.bb from main.c in iunlocker sourcecode (Absolutely no idea !!)
11. touch test points
12. bbupdater -v
13. minicom again (AT should be OK again)
14. Exit Terminal and Enter again (I think no way to exit minicom on Terminal)
15. ieraser
16. iunlocker with new compiled testcode.bb
(My God, How do I use Terminal while connecting the testpoints in the back, no way!)
I don't know if all these can be done on a iPhone Terminal, Anyone succeed before?

So what can explain the error 1011 when trying to flash then?
Or bbupdater erroring out saying that the baseband module doesn't respond or that the bootloader is too old ?
Obviously, it can be erased or damaged somehow ...

question to sam: if we replace the comm board with a new one, could that potentially fix the problem with people with a defective bootloader stuck in 1101?

Does flashing the NOR require to connect to the jtag points? or can it be done with the iphone closed?
It looks like my baseband firmware got nastily screwed up... What could I do?
Thanks
