    Default $PATH messed, anyone could post theirs?

    Hi, iīve been trying to add /var/root/bin to path, but my vt100 doe not have backdelete. So i finally ended having no ls command. I looked on .profile but i donīt know how is it supposed to be. Anyone could post it???. Just plain text not file needed as i can edit it with mobile textedit.

    thanks

    Code:
    % echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin
    %
    I never noticed the X11 part before... :-)

    But looking around I decided to look into my .profile, which says:

    % cat ~/.profile
    export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH
    %

    thanks a lot man

    UPDATE: Iīve tried different things on it but none worked. Also its strange your path is different on both cases when you echoed it and on profile... mine is like that:

    Code:
    PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/private/var/root/bin
    export PATH
    finally i left it like it was, uninstalled unrar and unzip (the apps asked me for add them to path) and ls command is back.

    oh, i have moved my apps to /var/root/applications, but is it necesary to add something? looks that all works ok so...

    If things are working then don't change anything :-)

    You are right, we ought to make provisions for searching the new mobile structure, but not today. Here's my complete /.profile file with annotations

    Code:
    # System-wide .profile for sh(1); lives in /.profile on my iPhone

    # mickey - 20071030 - /var/root/bin added for Erica's Utilities
    # mickey - 20071029 - changed TERM from vt102 to ansi
    # mickey - 20070930 - added ifconfig to show IP address on start

    # PATH - how UNIX finds the application programs you've requested

    PATH="/var/root/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin"
    PATH="/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH"
    export PATH

    # TERM - how the system displays text, processes backspaces, etc.
    TERM="ansi" # vt102
    export TERM

    # ifconfig - display Wi-Fi IP address, if any
    ifconfig en0 | grep inet | sed 's/ /_/g' | cut -f 2-2 -d '_'
    Someday I will document the file paths, but not today.

    My pleasure. I was a UNIXer before Mac OS, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was a joy when Mac OS X 10.0.0 was released and I could slowly move everything from the Sun boxen in my basement to my laptop and give those "pizza boxes" away.

    Anything to give back is fun. That I now have a UNIX laptop (alas, still a G4 PB) and in my pocket (my iPhone) makes things that so much better.

    Friends don't let friends use Windows products.
