Optus network showing after upgrade
Interesting? After the latest upgrade through itunes under network it shows Optus (Australain carrier) I excitedly inserted my Optus sim and it shows signal bars but wont let me call out. With the Optus sim in the network (other and optus) reverts to just showing vpn and wifi. Also when i popped the att sim back in the optus option is now gone for good. What the hell am I smoking???? : )

As far as I know, all GSM phones can find all GSM networks. Whether the phone can connect to a network (for anything other than emergency calls) is another matter.
If your iPhone hasn't been unlocked then maybe it's displaying those networks, trying to connect to one, then Apple's lock cuts in and says, nope, nothing to see here, move along. Just my guess.
Optus is fine - the TurboSIM forum has a number of people who are currently on it. But you'll only get GPRS speeds, not EDGE for data. EDGE is pretty darn slow, GPRS is excruciating. Just be prepared.

Unless of course Apple is prepping for an Optus rollout in Australia!
Does anyone have any up to date info on which carrier is getting the iPhone in March, when the Apple Store Sydney opens?

FYi you get no data capabilities at all using Optus.
if you open google maps for example,it says "could not activate EDGE: You are not subscribed to EDGE".
There is no settings to setup the GPRS bearer...therefore no data via sim at all.
