Ouch. Being a mobile internet device is a major draw of the iPhone. I'd be switching carriers if that was the case.
But are you sure? I'm almost certain I've heard accounts of people on Optus using GPRS.
Try going to: Settings > General > Network > EDGE
Type in the Optus APN: internet
You may need a data plan for it to work, but it should be possible to get at least slow GPRS data on Optus.
If it really doesn't, then Telstra Pre-Paid SIM starter packs are available for $25, with $25 credit to be used over 6 months, and you can add a data pack to them ($16 for 10 MB, $29 for 70 MB, etc).
After spending so much on the iPhone and going to the trouble of getting it unlocked, it would be silly not to be able to use data through it. For me, that's just as important as making a phone call (checking email on the run is so convenient).

I stand corrected, and you are 100% correct!
Thanks dotmike! Works a charm.
also shows data downloaded/uploaded on usage page under EDGE.

just wondering what the speed is like on the GPRS on iphone on Australia network.
I'm currently with optus, on my contract it states 2.2cents/kb for WAP over GPRS
and it also says 0.55c/kb for wireless internet.
So which one will i be charged?
Cheers
