Default Oops, I gave iphoneunlocking.com my IMEI!

So amidst all this excitement, I sort of gave iphoneunlocking.com my IMEI number. Question: What is an IMEI and assuming iphoneunlocking.com are evil, what can they do with it?

Keep in mind, my iPhone currently isn't connected to a cell carrier (I'm in Canada). I in fact paid cash to buy it off someone who went to Buffalo. There's no credit card attached to it? Can iphoneunlocking.com really do anything to me?

    Thanks

The most they can likely do with your IMEI code is "clone" your iPhone onto another device. This could then allow them to make phone calls for nefarious purposes that might result in being traceable back to your iPhone (ie, you).

Realistically, they look just legitimate enough that they're not likely engaged in that type of fraud. More likely they're collecting the IMEIs to attempt to do some sort of analysis with them, as others have suggested, or to try to later enforce a one-per registration policy (people can have multiple e-mail addresses, but you're not going to have multiple IMEIs unless you have multiple iPhones).

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially if you're using an unactivated iPhone that you bought second-hand. The likelihood of anybody tracing the IMEI back to your iPhone is fairly slim, at least until you do put a SIM card in it and start using it.

Your serial number? Not really... I suppose if they lived in your neighbourhood they could claim you stole their iPhone and try to use the serial number to prove it.

Or perhaps they could register the iPhone with Apple (if you haven't done so already), although that wouldn't really benefit them in any way.

Electronically, however, the serial number is pretty much useless. It's the IMEI that counts as far as the cellular network is concerned.

Hold on! How did you gave it to them? You mean if you gave them your cell number they can figure out what IMEI is on phone that you are using?

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 17 or 15 digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or UMTS network.
