Nobody called it a stupid idea, relax.

It is an interesting approach but maybe we need to understand better if it really works. This is why I asked for a professional opinion of somebody here on the forum who may actually know more about such stuff, incl. the statistical analysis and value of such information.

    The theory is this

A CAR has a VIN Vechile Idetification Number it is typically around 17 digits

    1234567890ABCDEFG

1 2 and 3 are the country codes and the manufacturer
4-8 are codes used by manufacturer to determine model features etc.
9 is a kind of hash check
0 (position 10) is the year
    A is the Manufacturing plant
    BCDEF is the serial number

If Apple is using a similar pattern to their serial number then it can provide information to future buyers.

I know this technique was used quite a bit for Intel CPU's a year or so ago to determine which plant the chip was made in because the ones made in i think it was the Malaysian plant were more overclockable than those from other plants.

    Thanks gonads,

That's the idea I was going for. It seemed like people must have thought I was phishing for serial numbers or something. I figured that while the dev team works at unlocking rather than just sitting here refreshing the forum to see if there is an update on the unlock we could give back by decrypting the serial number. I think everyone missed the point of the exercise though... Thanks for pointing it out (again).

The reason I made the "stupid idea" post above was that I tried to offer help in another post because my Jon activated phone DOES have working YouTube. When I offered to help troubleshoot that one too I was called a liar.

I'm just trying to HELP you guys. I don't have a gat... but I've got a soldering gun.

    Thank pendalf,

I've revised the original post with some updated info. It looks like we can determine all the info needed from the first 5 characters. Hopefully I'll find enough of these to determine correlations between 5 and 7 LCD IDs, green tinted cameras and whatever other build related issues are out there.

I just had a brilliant idea!

I can go to an Apple Store and take down the S/Ns of some of the display iPhones and use them to build my list!

Anybody else that wants to submit their first 5 characters and LCD ID are welcome.

Default This is why its a good idea!!

    OK

Guys if some one out there can make a program that can change the serial number on the phone then if you but a iphone 3g off Fleebay!! faulty one say this phone has no warrenty then we could change the serial number that comes up on Itunes when you take the phone to apple shop they check the serial to see if the phone is in its 12months warrenty
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

check that...put you serial in seee what date it gives you!!

if your phone is faulty they will give you a replacement.. but it depends if your phone is in its 12months!!!!

Nice work kid for those interested on buying a 3GS you will find the hard way that your iphone is locked until the dev team or some else find a solution.
Do i need to run blackrain everytime i power down the iphone? - The iPhone Blog Forums

the serial numbers for those iphone are greater than 40, check the 4th and 5th digit, it will tell you the phone can not unlock. I tried one today exact the same the way described in the forum above. Thanks to taichi to remind us the value of the serial number.

    peace to all
