    Default Odd Edge Connection

Long time reader, first time poster.
I unlocked my phone with iunlock. On unicel here in Vermont. $15 data plan. All working very well. However over the last few days anything with DNS doesn't appear to work at all on my iphone. I have had nothing but lucky anywhere recently.
Here is some insight. I went to the field test menu and I am able to get an IP address. Both with and without apn.unicel.com entered, which is normal and proper according to unicel. It even gives me a live ip address. However when I type in a site into safari, google maps, mail, anything I get nothing. When I look up something with the network utility and find an ip address of a web site(google, cnn, yahoo, unicel) All the sites load. This is frustrating. On my crappy nokia old phone mobile google loads, mobile yahoo loads. Do you think some how my cell provider has marked my iphone or a cap on the data?

Now my paranoid self. I went to the dentist last week and got an xray. Big lead blanket and all and my phone was in my jeans pocket, but under the blanket. Would this do anything? I don't think so since wi-fi, edge, just not dns works. I dunno too weird.
    Mike

Oh yeah, wi-fi works just fine still!

    Mike,
    Same problem here.
You're now the third Vermont customer to report losing edge data
on Unicel. Seems pretty clear Unicel changed something around Friday
    of last week.

I've gotten nowhere with their support techs. I called to verify the
DNS address their network is handing to /var/run/resolv.conf, and
they didn't even know they owned the addresses.

Connected to edge, my resolv.conf gets:
    nameserver 63.109.157.50
    nameserver 63.166.119.125

I never logged them before the service started failing, so I don't know if
the addresses changed, or their servers have stopped working.
They're not public servers, so you can't (I can't) ping them through WiFi.
I can ping them when connected through edge but I don't know how
to tell if they're valid DNS servers.

Did you put your sim card in your old phone and edge worked?
If so, did your Nokia list the addresses above as its DNS servers?

Anyway, there's a few of these threads now so its not your dentists fault.
Keep wearing the tin foil hat though, just in case

    try this it might help

It happens quite often. The known fix to that is to use OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com/) nameservers
    208.67.222.222
    and/or
    208.67.220.220
on the iphone. Otherwise the iphone tries to use the cached nameserver of your router and sometimes fails then. i have set one in the iphone and both in my router aswell. even when travelling (hotspot), the opendns nameservers are really fast, free and really reliable.
    helped on my iphone

how do a run the "/var/run/resolv.conf" to find out the ip? I'm a unix newbie even though I fix computers. Those windows spyware issues and stuff don't get me into that relm.

How does one setup the opendns.com servers. I see all kinds of devices listed for the setup but nothing related to the iphone.
Who's going to form the new england unlocked iphone user group?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Thanks gaz,
The problem is I don't know how to change nameservers for edge. When you switch from WiFi to edge the nameserver lines in resolv.conf change. WiFi gets its DNS from the settings panel, but edge gets them over the radio.

I tried removing the symbolic link resolve.conf in /etc and replacing it with a fixed file with the openens addresss, but got the same result. I now suspect Safari and other local apps don't use resolv.conf at all. I forgot to test ping or curl with the hard coded resolv.conf. I'll try that tomorrow.

If you know how to force an edge DNS, please share your wisdom.

    Mike,
    Type:
    cat /var/run/resolv.conf
from the Terminal.app program and post the nameserver addresses that display.
Don't be wifi connected at the time.

Users group? We're going to have a lame URL: http://12.34.56.78

well I think we might be getting somewhere. I ran the command about 10 minutes ago and nothing. Said it could not find the file.
I just ran it again and it resolved
    nameserver: 63.109.157.50
    nameserver: 63.166.119.125

    Maybe they're on it!

    Possibly some good news.
I was able to talk to a Unicel tech who understands networking and seems pretty sharp. He was able to confirm that this problem is affecting at least one of their supported devices. So its no longer a "sorry, we don't support iPhones" issue.

Thanks for continuing to dog this one. I called 611 again today and ended up frustrated with another rep who had no idea what a DNS was. I didn't disclose that I was using an iPhone for fear of the "go away" response, but in the end they essentially told me to go to my local store for a new phone because clearly it must be broken. Oh well...

    Thanks!
