Default [2.0] Hacked 2G on O2 Pay Monthly upgraded to 2.0 - no iPhone contract needed

Just to let UK readers know that you can have v2.0 running on your 2G iPhone with any O2 pay monthly contract - no iPhone sim needed.

Simply virginise the phone, restore to 1.1.4 and update as normal. Then activate in iTunes using your old O2 sim and away you go.

Just done it and all is working fine! Woohoo!

Default can i confirm i understand you correctly?

A UK-bought 1st gen iphone, upgraded in itunes to iphone OS 2.0, with no unlocking/pwning etc run on it, will work with any O2 pay-monthly sim card? No unlocking etc procedure required? Appstore works, all that sort of thing?

yea i did it yesterday works fine, but you have to have an UK phone or American phone.

    this wont work:

iphone 1.1.4 t-mobile sim card usa iphone <--------> iphone upgraded to 2.0 t-mobile sim card usa iphone

    this will work:

iphone 1.1.4 AT&T sim card usa iphone <----------> iphone upgraded to 2.0 at&t simcard usa

its funny cause it needs to activate but you follow the steps to activate all it does is ask for apple id and thats it!!

i got mine unlcked this way.

Yup, although I cannot report for ANY sim!

Just update to 2.0, stick in your O2 sim and activate on iTunes (it won't ask for you to sign up!). Now I have 2.0, although no installer.app (which I can live without now I have AppStore). Once the new Pwnage appears I may hack it.

This looks like a deliberate move on O2's part, possibly to lure all those second hand phones over to O2 PAYG/Monthly contracts. Smart move.

wow great, will give it a go! is it necessary to revirginise? i'm imagining it'll be fine to just upgrade, since 2.0 wipes the phone to start again...

if you have a UK phone with an 02 sim it will work fine, but not sure about revirginising again but im sure the dev team will come up with something...

actually... got as far as the continue button, then decided to hold off, incase, say, pwnage 2.0 won't work on officially updated phone or something. seems unlikely, but a few more days won't hurt. though it's SO tempting...

I would re-virginise just to be on the safe side; it's easy, quick and ensures that everything is as is.

Holding off is your choice, I guess. It all depends how important installer.app is to you...

    Good luck!
