I'm going to risk asking a bit of a noob question and hope I don't get flamed.

Can someone explain what the iPhone baseband is?

Sure, just do some research and you will find the answer, just like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseband

Yeh I read that before posting. I was kind of wondering why the baseband isn't downgraded when the guys are flashing from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2.

sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

Well, that's a totally different question (very interesting, BTW) and I'm afraid I'm not able to answer it. I hope some brain here can give us some light on the subject.

There's an interesting thread in this forum about it -- http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8491.

The problem with flashing the radio downwardly, is that whilst you can go up, you can't go down. If you were to go down, you would sever communication between the processor and the BB, whereby placing your phone in a situation of no return and the phone won't let you do this -- which is good -- since it would brick you phone in the true sense of the world.

Whether or not there is a workaround stands to be seen. Personally, I don't see it, unless, of course, you were to hack the BB up in pieces and piece it back together. The danger with doing so is that you need to write the BB in blocks and if any of these blocks don't match, or if you step on something else during the procedure, you're phone is dead. One of the reasons that all AnySim users find themselves with a DE IMEI (0049) is because bits and pieces of another phone's BB with the same chipset were no doubt cut and paste into the BB. The ideal approach would have been to flash the EEPROM and then overlay a brand new BB (this is what IPSF did). The problem is that this sounds easier said than done, and cleary -- or so it would seem -- IPSF has some insider information which allowed then perform their unlock.

what do you think the most likely solution to the 1.1.1 upgrade will be? in non technical terms.

assume we will we have to relock, upgrade and then unlock? I guess a patched 1.1.1 update is unlikley?

you'll note a lack of understanding of the technical issues involved in my post

Re: patched version of 1.1.1. This could take some time. The DMG/package still haven't been decrypted. This is really the key to understanding how to activate/jailbreak the phone, etc..

If you're currently running 1.1.1., downgrade the firmware to 1.0.2 and wait for the upgraded AnySim program.

If you're currently running 1.0.2., don't do anything.

The Dev Team's priority as I see it, will be to modify the existing patch such that it works with the 1.1.1. BB/modem/radio.... Thereafter, they'll continue trying to get into the DMG and begin focusing on the 1.1.1 activation/jailbreak and, of course, the unlock.
