Unhappy "No Wi-Fi" on new iPhone

    Hello,

I have a new iPhone I just pulled out of the box today, and I've already managed to break it. Here's the story.

The phone came with 1.1.2 firmware, so I started out by downgrading to 1.1.1. After that, I used the standard *#307# procedure to get into the preferences, configure Wi-Fi, go to jailbreakme.com and install OktoPrep. All of this went swimmingly.

Next part was to upgrade back to 1.1.2 via iTunes. This is where I screwed up. I'm not sure what I did, but apparently it had not actually upgraded to 1.1.2. So I ended up unwittingly running jailbreak.jar for 1.1.2 while the phone was still running 1.1.1. I didn't realize my mistake until after it was done.

Now, in preferences, Wi-Fi is grayed out. I have reverted back to 1.1.1 without any issue, but with Wi-Fi broken I can't jailbreak it.

I tried reverting to 1.0.2, but it gets stuck at "Waiting for iPhone..." in iTunes. I can switch back and forth from 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, though.

IMEI and all other numbers seem to be correct and fine, but the MAC address for Wi-Fi is listed as "N/A."

I'm out of ideas at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

The best suggestion I can offer is use the search button. This has been dealt with at length in previous posts. Good luck.. Post your results.

I searched pretty extensively before starting this thread and all of the threads I have dug up have gone unanswered.

These situations seem to be pretty much the same as mine:

    http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=19776

    http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18994

I apologize if I'm breaking protocol here by starting a new thread on the subject, but I figured it would make more sense to start a thread about my own personal situation rather than bumping all of these threads that have died without any sort of positive resolution. I have yet to see any authoritative explanation or solution for what has been happening to these phones.

You have an interesting issue. I would say that you need to retrace your steps and my guess is you skipped a step somewhere along the way.

As I said in my original post, I have already restored the phone to 1.1.2 in the way you described. The Wi-Fi remains broken, regardless of firmware version.

My guess is that you have a hardware failure. A friend of mine got a 1.1.1 iPhone, jailbreaked, activated and unlocked it. He could use it for a while and, suddenly, the "No Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi greyed out" issue appeared.

We tried everything and more (downgrading to 1.0.2, erasing the baseband, upgrading to 1.1.2...). Sometimes the iPhone had WiFi for some seconds, but it never lasted.

After reading in several forums, we found out that the "No Wi-Fi" issue has been happening since the iPhone was released, and if somebody goes to an Apple Store, the iPhone is promptly changed.

Somewhere I read that it may be a very visible hardware fault. Some guy said he opened his iPhone and noticed some kind of short circuit. We didn't check it, since my friend decided to use his iPhone just as a phone + mp3 player because he didn't want to risk breaking it completely.

    Good luck with your iPhone!
