Default no volume in earpiece, mic doesn't work?

This happened to my 1.02 iphone yesterday. It was working fine before I got on a cross-country flight, I watched a couple of movies in flight in airplane mode, then when I landed I got a call and couldn't hear anything.

The call was connected but the person on the other end couldn't hear me talking nor could I hear them. However, if I activate the speaker phone they can hear me and I can hear them.

    A couple of questions:

1: this doens't feel like a hardware failure, especially since I know the mic works when in speaker mode, but doesn't work when in handset mode. Could tehre be something odd with the software?

2: If I need to take it into Apple, what do I have to do to it to make sure that I can get it serviced? (I'm an ATT sub, but I have not officially activated, I used iNdependence to use the SIM from my ATT blackberry)

I assume that if I get a replacement phone, Apple will be giving me newer firmware. I'm going to have to start reading again about how to activate without itunes, but that's for another day.

    thanks in advance.

Just turn your phone into airplane mode again, reboot the phone, then turn airplane mode back off. (or vice versa). Play with the airplane mode settings a bit.

This is a known bug and can be fixed.

stick your headphones in again really hard and jiggle it around. You have to make sure that you are applying force when you jiggle it around. This may seem odd but its a known solution. I had the same problem as you. Basically the iPhone thinks the headphones are still plugged in. So just plug them back in and push down hard and jiggle it around. You must apply force or this will not work. Good luck.

I just found this thread as I was having the same problem! Thanks a bunch! I was also dreading going to the "Genius Bar" again.

It isn't very reassuring that everytime I answer the phone it may or may not be working but you can always use the speaker phone.

For Googles sake which may help others trying to find this answer:
The no sound in iPhone earpiece solution. iPhone speaker not working. No sound in earpiece. No volume in earpiece speaker.
