My phone just yesterday started to make crackling noises through the earpiece, and it got worse and worse until the sound shut out. If I pump up the volume to the max I can hear sporadically but it crackles and cuts out. The sound is fine with my sim in another phone...

Any ideas? I didn't get it wet at all but just in case i'm putting it near a dehumidifier overnight.

this happened to me as well. I did a restore and the
mic and speaker did not work. Then i inserted and removed
the headphone and it began to operate. It seems there is
switch inside the headphone jack that opensthe speaker
circuit(makes sense), this connection can sometimes stick
dust can enter the jack hole and cause a high resistance.
I recommend using a spray of compressed air to
remove debris. It worked for me. Best of luck!

Hum... I have some compressed air and tried to spray it all around the headphone jack/inside.

I think it is a hardware issue and the earpiece speaker just stopped working. Can anyone confirm if the earpiece speaker is located on the camera flex cable pictured here?

If so it would be a breeze to replace.

Just thought I'd chime in on this one as well. My earpiece went silent on me today and it appears to have been the headphone jack issue. I inserted the headphones and twisted the jack a few times and suddenly everything is back to normal. Hope this doesn't turn into a recurring problem.

I have had the same problem at least six times now, and inserting the headphones in seems to fix it every time. Has anyone called Apple about the issue?

another thing you can try is (try each of them one by one):

    1. plug in headphones, play some ipod music, then turn off ipod, unplug headphones.

    2. plug in headphones, play some ipod music, unplug headphones without stopping ipod manually.

I think one of the two cases messes up the speaker. It is probably a software bug on Apple's side.
