    Default no firmware?

hi not sure this is the right place to post this but here goes anyways....

i am an idiot when it comes to anything apple...
i found an iphone 4 have tried (somewhat) to find the owner with no avail...
i plugged it in and tried to restore it - didn't work
and tried jail breaking it and now only comes up in recovery mode as if there was no firmware on it...

what can i do or is this now a paper weight?

First, I have to say the correct thing to do is alert either law enforcement or the carrier. One of the two can usually remarry lost phones and their owners. You really should do that first, it's not your phone and if you had a $600 phone you left somewhere, I'm sure you'd appreciate it if the person who found it attempted to return it to you instead of attempting to make it yours.

In any case, if it's in recovery mode, you will likely need to restore it. They probably remotely disabled it with Find My iPhone when they found it was lost. If that's the case, it's also worth mention that they likely know where the phone was the last time it was powered on with GPS coverage, in case that happens to be your house. Beyond that, remote disable with Find My iPhone is continual, meaning that even if you restore firmware to the device it will likely be remotely wiped and disabled again, until the person removes the disable on the account...

Only real choice other than returning it is to restore it, but the odds are that will not ultimately fix the problem. Beyond that, doesn't NZ have an IMEI blacklist? If so, this phone may never actually make phone calls as it could be flagged as lost or stolen and never work as a phone again.
