Default New sales policy in US Apple Stores?

    Hi,

I'm from Germany, where you can buy the iPhone only directly from the local carrier and have to sign a contract on the spot when you buy it.

Last week, I asked some colleagues in the US to try to get me an iPhone from the Apple Store. They were told (in a store in Minnesota) that you now also had to sign an AT&T contract before they would hand over the iPhone.

Can someone confirm (or hopefully disprove) that?

    Thanks.

    f

    Thank you for your replies.

kkdol: The clerk at the Apple Store told them that even if they ordered online they would have to sign the contract with the delivery guy. (Sounds strange, I know, but this is what he seems to have said).

ceddy: I just assume that it won't take long for AnySIM to be updated to work with 1.1.2.

iv had 3 iphones delivered in last two days and didnt sign any contract. the apple guy is full of crap, even apple wuldnt make you sign contract with FedEx/UPS guy its just a scare tactic as they dont want people to hack the iphone.

Thank you very much for the answer. That was what I was thinking too, but I needed confirmation before I again try to find someone willing to buy one for me.

Just for laughs: In Germany, the iPhone cost over USD 2,300.- if you include the monthly fees for the cheapest t-mobile contract you have to sign.

this certainly isn't the case in the uk yet! I seriously doubt that this would be the case in the USA either. Unless that is, people really aren't taking up an extended AT&T account. However, since the iPod touch is only a little cheaper than the iPhone I can't imagine apple are subsidizing the iPhone enough to feel the need to enforce this radical move.
